Where to begin? I'm a professional single woman, who for one reason or another has not found "Mr.Right" to settle down with and raise a family. Being very independent and confident in my organizational skills plus having a strong love of children, I've decided to start my own family as a single mother.
Originally I was planning to adopt one child. But I'm not getting any younger and my 40th birthday isn't that far off. After reviewing the costs of adoption, I've decided that its much less expensive to adopt two children at once than to wait 1-2 years between. Home studies, visas, and other documents have an expiration date. After that date elaspes its just like starting the process over from scratch at the full cost. Where as, adopting the second child at the same time as the first adds $3,000-$4,000 more for a savings of roughly $10,000. Granted this savings is just related to the cost to adopt, not the long term costs associated with raising two children.
I started off with adopting from Panama. As I investigated further into that process, I became more concerned. Panama is relatively new to international adoption and the time in country is uncertain. Agencies will be quick to say no more than 30 days but that is not necessarily true. Some families have run into problems which have delayed their adoption finalization as much as 8 months. Being single, I could not afford to be away from work that long. Thirty-days was pushing it as I would have to take part of that on FMLA which means no income during that time.
I began researching different adoption agencies and countries and stumbled across several websites that spoke of independent adoptions using Cathy Harris as the facilitator. I also joined a few mail lists where many adoptive parents were saying how good Cathy was to work with. So I read up as much as I could on the Ukraine adoption process and the successful adoptions that Cathy has helped to facilitate. I decided that I wanted to pursue an independent adoption using Cathy and her company (Ukrainian Angels).
